The Lowther Unit, St. Andrew’s Hospital, Northampton
This major project was built in the grounds of St. Andrew’s Hospital, Northampton and provides accommodation for 60 adolescents and young people with a variety of mental health problems.
It consists of 12 bed home units, each with their own sleeping, and recreational and living facilities.
The patients attend a school or educational facility within the complex and take lunch in a refectory.
The units themselves form a secure perimeter to a large internal courtyard and recreational space. A secure external sports area is also provided. The configuration of the building has largely obviated the need for high and unsightly security fencingwhich has contributed to the therapeutic environment which has been created through sensitive interior and exterior design.
One of the units provides forensic accommodation.
