Bournville Architects, working with General Practice Investments Ltd (GPI), have recently been appointed to construct two new Primary Care Centres in the South Torfaen area of Wales, following a competitive bid process against five other short-listed developers. As part of the bid, Bournville Architects were required to produce concept schemes for the two projects on sample sites – see images below.

The new developments will be based on an innovative ‘hub & spoke’ system to re-organise existing general medical services for the area and bring other services, currently provided in a hospital setting, into the scope of Primary Care.

The new ‘hub’ Health & Social Care Resource Centre will be approximately 1600sqm in size and include:
Relocation of an existing GP Practice
Minor Surgery Suite
Local Health Board & Trust Consulting/Treatment Rooms
Space for Voluntary Organisations
Optometrist, Dentist & Dispensing Pharmacy

The new ‘spoke’ Primary Care Centre will be approximately 1200sqm in size and include:
Co-location of  two existing GP Practices
Local Health Board & Trust Consulting and Treatment Rooms for various clinics
Space for Voluntary Organisations
Optometrist & Dentist
3rd Party Pharmacy

It is hoped that the developments will be completed in early 2010.
